Probation Officer is the first-line supervisor responsible for the quality of probation/pretrial services executed by probation officers and specialists in the full range of operations, requirements and services to the court and public.
The position will supervise a team of probation officers, specialists and probation technicians, act in place of an officer or specialist as required, and perform other duties as assigned.
As part of the district's management team, the Supervisory Probation Officer is responsible for driving organizational excellence while leading and coordinating major programs of the organization.
The position demands integrity, initiative, teamwork, creativity, flexibility, as well as a high degree of technical expertise and a demonstrated desire to lead.
Assigns and schedules work of the assigned team and/or unitMaintains knowledge of statutes, case law, and national and local policies and proceduresReviews and evaluates work of the team and/or unit to ensure accuracy, quality, timeliness and adherence to statute and national and local policiesCollaborates with probation officers, providing direction and assistance to the officerTrain or assist in training district staff and other court personnel.
Mentors and trains officers and specialists.
Confers regularly with probation officers; provides direction and assistance toward improving investigative, supervision and writing skills.
Assists probation officers in meeting the needs of persons under supervision with complex problems and circumstances; provides leadership in the development of sentencing alternatives, utilization of community resources, and the application of professional sound case management principles.
Assesses the adjustment of persons under supervision in collaboration with the assigned officer and assists in decision making in all areas of case supervisionReviews pretrial and presentence investigations to ensure compliance with statutes, Rules, guidelines, and national and local policies.
Collaborates with investigative officers regarding recommendations for release/detention and/or sentencingActs in place of the probation officer when needed due to leave and/or emergency situationsIs directly involved in the location monitoring program alert rotation to include weekends and non-core hours.
This may require field work during these times that is usually unplanned and spontaneous.
Evaluates the performance of probation officers in the unit on a formal and informal basisResponsible for staff relationships and morale within the district, encouraging an inclusive and collegial work environment for allActs as a communication link between line staff and senior management, assuring an open line of communication as well as implementation of district objectivesDevelops understanding of cooperative relationships with judges, the court family, other law enforcement and community service agencies and the publicMay perform the duties of a U.

Probation Officer as neededQualification The qualified applicant must have three years of specialized experience, including at least one year as a CL 28 probation/pretrial services officer in the U.
S.
Courts.
(Please note that for applicants currently at CL 28, if selected for promotion, our compensation program requires that the employee must be a CL 29 for a year before being promoted to the CL 30).
Specialized experience is defined as progressively responsible administrative, technical, professional, supervisory, or managerial experience which provided an opportunity to gain (a) the skill in dealing with others in person-to-person work relationships, (b) the ability to exercise mature judgment, and (c) the knowledge of the basic concepts, principles, and theories of management and the ability to understand the managerial policies applicable to the U.

The duties of this position may be adjusted for applicants who do not have three years' experience as a U.
S.
Probation Officer to allow the individual to meet the three-year requirement in a primary law enforcement position and thereby continue eligibility under the law enforcement retirement provisions.
The successful candidate must have a proven track record of technical excellence in investigations and/or supervision, as well as excellent interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
The successful candidate must have the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize work effectively, and meet deadlines.
The successful candidate must have the ability to take a lead role in district projects and initiatives.
Completion of an advanced degree is preferred.
